Americans are sick and tired of diets, and have found they don’t really work. Just the word “diet” will send people running. One might define the term “diet” as the condition of eating much lettuce and constantly being hungry. Well, while we’re busy tallying up every carb, fat gram, and calorie, skinny Europeans are eating cream sauces, buttery bread, and decadent desserts. This phenomenon has been dubbed the “French Paradox.”

The native peoples of the Kalahari desert, the Kalahari bushmen, have used Hoodia Gordonii as an appetite suppressant for thousands of years. It could quiet the hunger and thirst of hunters and warriors on long journeys through the desert. Even their dogs were given slices of the Hoodia plant so that the animal companions would leave the limited food supplies alone. These native Africans are still chewing Hoodia leaves today to alleviate fatigue and keep from starving.

I recently had a post regarding a company that has introduced a new product into the market – Hoodia gum. Honestly, I don’t think that a stick of gum can actually have the amount of Hoodia required to have any effect on your appetite.
As if this is not enough – later another company announced their own version of the gum. The press release explained that the company was the pioneer in introducing a gum to the market in 2006, even indicating the concern of the company’s CEO that consumers might purchase the wrong gum. This was to imply that their company is the only one that makes authentic Hoodia gum.
Which of these gums contain authentic Hoodia then? Personally, I think none of them because from what I know, when making gum, heat is required and heat can destroy Hoodia Gordonii.
