Hoodia Gordonii – What Is It?

Hoodia is very popular worldwide but only a handful understands what it really is and what it is touted to be able to do. It is an appetite suppressant that comes from the plant Hoodia Gordonii which is found in South Africa. The San tribe of this country has been using this for a very long time now to suppress their appetite and thirst during long and extended hunting trips.

The people of the San tribe take a small piece and remove its herby bark then eat the fleshy portion raw; this enables them to last for days without a single bite to eat.

A small piece of Hoodia Gordonii can work to suppress appetite for extended periods of time.

Hoodia – A Plant Similar To The Cactus

Hoodia Gordonii is classified as a succulent cactus-like plant that grows up to 7 feet tall. Its features include large flowers that have a foul odor upon blooming. Hoodia also grows in Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe despite it being indigenous to the Kalahari Desert in South Africa.

P57 – The Chemical In Hoodia That Suppresses Appetite

The Hoodia plant contains a potent chemical which works to effectively suppress the appetite. This chemical is known as P57.

A pharmaceutical based in Great Britain known as Phytopharm was awarded exclusive rites to extract this chemical and market it. The license was granted to them in 1997 by the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Pfizer soon came into the deal and worked in partner with Phytopharm to try and synthesize P57 so that it could be used in various dieting products.

The expense required in this endeavor was too high and Pfizer pulled out of the partnership in 2002. Soon after, Unilever came in and, along with Phytopharm, spent millions of dollars in the development of a Hoodia weight loss product which was supposedly going to be marketed under Unilever’s popular line of dieting products known as SlimFast.  In November of 2008, like Pfizer, Unilever again abandoned Phytopharm. This is due to a recent study that indicated that the use of Hoodia in a drink-based product was unsuitable.

At the moment, Phytopharm is looking for another partner in this endeavor.

How Does P57 Work To Suppress The Appetite?

The part of the brain that controls hunger is known as the hypothalamus; this brain region regulates appetite by detecting the glucose levels in the blood. Food consumption causes glucose levels to rise as food is broken down. When this happens, the hypothalamus sends a signal that results to the feeling of fullness. P57 works like glucose in that it sends a signal to the hypothalamus, only 10,000 times stronger. So, even when you have not eaten anything, the brain is duped into thinking that you are already full.

Supplements Containing Hoodia

Hoodia Gordonii PillsHeavy protection covers the Hoodia Gordonii plant because it is considered an endangered species; hence, one cannot easily export the plant. There are no Hoodia plants or seedlings in your local botanical nursery, so the only way to get it is through a diet supplement.

These supplements are prepared by drying the Hoodia Gordonii plant and grounding it into a fine powder. This is the powder that is exported and sold to various companies who are involved in making diet supplement products.

Despite the high demand for Hoodia, exporting it is very difficult because of its endangered status; hence, demands are not easily met. This makes raw Hoodia Gordonii very expensive. This situation has caused a major problem among supplement companies and consumers alike.

Beware Of The Fake Hoodia

Some suppliers of Hoodia tend to trick their clients and adulterate their product to increase their profits; in most cases the client companies aren’t even aware that they are receiving diluted Hoodia and not the authentic and pure Hoodia. Sometimes, the trouble lies in companies who have access to pure Hoodia, but dilute this with additives and fillers to reduce the use of Hoodia to cut down on production costs. The loser in this chain of events is always the consumer who will have to search through a vast roster of Hoodia products that contain very little or none of the Hoodia extract. Buyers have to take their own precautions when buying Hoodia products because supplements are not regulated.

Make sure that you are label conscious and buy from reputable companies. These supplements can be quite expensive though, so if you want to make sure that you get your money’s worth, be sure that you get the authentic item. Read the Hoodia Buying Guide for more information.
